Kuala Lumpur. A muddy confluence.This colourful, vibrant and modern city of the world carries a humble name that holds with it its beginnings. Once a piece of land that surrounded a muddy confluence of two unknown rivers, it has lived through a harrowing and gripping tale, and today stands strong, with not a trace of her past hardships. Kuala Lumpur, is no longer just a muddy confluence, it's a name that resonates – to some it is home, to others it is a new beginning, to many it’s an adventure. So, what really is in a name? This documentary aims to figure that out. Our host is on a mission - he’s going on a date with his city – to learn all there is to know about her, through 8 of herstreet names. Our host will walk through the streets of Kuala Lumpur, learning of what was, what is and what will be. Like getting to know a new lover, he will learn of her past, how she’s come to be, and who she might become. We will dive into the hardships and struggles of each street, showcasing major points in history that these streets have witnessed and survived. From Jalan Raja, the street that keeps alive the memory of former powers, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, the once hip street that saw the faces of royalty, politicians and even superstars, to Jalan Pudu, an old almost dismissed street that’s hoping to revive its former glory – this will be Kuala Lumpur like you’ve never seen. This will be a city stripped. Along the way, he meets with the women and men who have not only made these streets their livelihood, but also their homes. Like one of Kuala Lumpur’s last film projectionists who will take our host on a movie date in the city’s first cinema that is still running today, or a group of cycling messengers who show our host a side to the city nobody has before, or be served dinner by the very hands that once fed the father of Malaysia’s independence. Like any new relationship, you get to know her through her friends. As though on a strange blind date, our host will also be armed with rarely seen archive photos of the streets. As a guide, he will scour the city’s streets looking to recreate these photos – a new memory of a not too distant past. The documentary will feature 8 different streets, based on themes that showcase the many different facets of the city. We will also animate old archive photos, to artistically meld into newly taken photos of the same composition. This will be a personal journey for our host, who is born and raised in Kuala Lumpur and is passionate about learning more about himself and his country, through the quirky and beautiful streets of Kuala Lumpur.
