Synopsis
Alex, a young man of Chinese descent, feels like a free man on the top of a mountain, living in Paris with his French girlfriend. When he suddenly has to face the mysterious death of his brother, he returns to his family in the Chinese district of Paris. Unable to follow the rites and traditions of his family, he feels estranged from his father's heritage, something he parted ways with a long time ago. With the help of his beautiful and disturbing cousin Lily and coping with his own ignorance of his father’s culture and language, he tries to unravel a family secret. Will he be strong enough to forgive the past and to reconcile with his family?
Synopsis
Alex, a thirtysomething man of Chinese descent, lives the typical carefree life of his European generation. After his brother’s sudden death, he is forced to look for an explanation by digging into his own family history, uncovering a secret. Torn between two cultures and two love interests, for the first time Alex must come to terms with his past and make real decisions.
Synopsis
Alex Chen and his girlfriend, Eloane, head to the mountains in order to go rock climbing. Their light-hearted holiday is put to an abrupt end, however, when Alex receives a shocking telephone call: his brother Jun is dead. Back in Paris’s Chinatown, Alex is determined to find out what happened. While his French mother retreats into mourning, his Chinese father refuses to tell him anything in detail. The traditional wake begins and Alex is left dealing with his relatives and the imminent cultural differences. Reluctant to believe that his brother died of a sudden brain haemorrhage, Alex begins to dig deeper into his father’s family history. His beautiful yet mysterious cousin Lili, who soon begins to exert an unexplainable force of attraction upon him, assists Alex in his quest. Fribourg-born François Yang’s autobiographically inspired debut is a subtly staged family drama in which cultures, family secrets and taboos collide.

Reviews:
- SOUL OF THE TIGER is a fascinating hybrid. Using the observational, low-key style of contemporary French cinema (think Mia Hansen-Løve or Oliver Assayas’s CLEAN), the Chinese-Swiss helmer Francois Yang tackles a subject familiar to this Festival’s audiences in his feature debut: the Asian émigré torn between East and West…..
…..SOUL OF THE TIGER, which first screened at the Zurich Film Festival, is infused with autobiographical details. Alex’s internal turmoil reflects the Swiss-born Yang’s own youthful rebellion against his Chinese heritage and the epiphanies Yang had while mourning the death of his own younger brother.
