Synopsis

The lie of a teenage girl destroys the world of her elder sister. Struggling to fix what she has done she finds out the truth about their mother.

Synopsis

A mother and her two daughters are struggling to get by in modern-day Bulgaria. Rayna along with her older sister and their mother make figurines and utensils sold to travelers and passers-by. Spending her days in the ramshackle workshop, Rayna is constantly pinning lies, yearning to splash some color in her otherwise dull and grey life. Soon enough, though, her fabrications begin to cross all moral lines, jeopardizing her family’s well being. A harsh film combining social portrait, psychological thriller and family drama in a tale that lies its way to the truth.

Synopsis

Teenaged Rayna (an unforgettable Monika Naydenova) lives with her mother (Svetlana Yancheva) and older sister Kamelia (Elena Zamyarkova) in a house by a busy countryside highway in Bulgaria. The family survives by digging clay out of a hillside, processing it, and selling it to local businesses. Rayna also sculpts terracotta figurines, which she sells along the roadside by hooking potential customers with outrageous lies about her ‘traumatic’ childhood. Eventually, she tells one whopper too many, which threatens to destroy the family’s already fragile existence…

Reviews:

  • A deserving winner of a Special Mention in the San Sebastián International Film Festival’s prestigious ‘New Directors’ competition last year, writer/director/editor Svetla Tsotsorkova’s drama is unsentimental, honest, and visually inventive.

  • ‘The second feature by Svetla Tsotsorkova stands as a testament to her talent and her ability… This story about three women surviving as best they can… manages to thrill and entertain, as well as shed light on a reality that will be unknown to most of us.’—Cristóbal Soage, Cineuropa
  • A dark and light drama of a beautiful sensitivity.
  • Rayna, the young teenage heroine of the film is wonderfully played by the stunning and magnetic Monika Naydenova (non-professional actress) who was already the main character of Thirst, the preceding and the director's first film….At his side, the composition of actor Assen Blatechky is just admirable as he brilliantly interprets the complex character of Miro, the scrap-metal neighbor, and his evolution.
  • Svetla Tsotsorkova signs a dark and sensitive family drama with Sister . A harsh psychological thriller which above all marks the revelation of a fabulous actress. A film that is both harsh and endearing.
