Wiebke (45) lives together with her adoptive daughter Nicolina (9) on an idyllic horse farm. After many years of waiting, she now has the chance to adopt another girl, Raya (5), to provide Nicolina with the longed-for sister. The first weeks are harmonious, and the siblings get along great. But shortly thereafter, Wiebke realizes that Raya, initially shy and charming, is becoming increasingly aggressive and poses a danger to herself and others. The mother will soon have to cross borders and take extreme decisions to protect her cubs.
Synopsis
Following her award-winning debut NOTHING BAD CAN HAPPEN, director Katrin Gebbe has now reunited with the producer Verena Gräfe-Höft from Junafilm for her second drama which centers on the decision by the horse trainer Wiebke to adopt a five-year-old girl Raya from Bulgaria as a sibling for her older adoptive daughter Nicolina. Wiebke soon realizes, though, that Raya appears to be suffering from an attachment disorder and is incapable of establishing an emotional connection to anyone around her. The girl becomes increasingly aggressive and poses a danger to herself and others, especially Nicolina. After consulting a neurologist, Wiebke has to decide whether she is willing to keep Raya...

About the Director:
Katrin Gebbe was born in Ibbenbüren, Germany, and holds a master's degree in directing from the Hamburg Media School. Her award - winning debut feature, Nothing Bad Can Happen (13), premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes. Pelican Blood (19) is her latest film.
Director’s Statement and Inspiration:
· Pelikanblut explores the nightmare vision of parenthood. The title refers to the Christian image of the mother pelican that feeds her dead offspring with her own blood and as a result brings them back to life. It is a metaphor for self-sacrificing love and faith. The protagonist of my film as well cuts her own sacrificial path in order to heal her emotionally ‘dead’ child. She starts a questionable treatment and becomes more and more obsessed with finding a solution for her dilemma.
· The symbolism of a mother pelican feeding her babies is rooted in ancient myth. According to one legend, in a time of famine, the mother pierced her breast to feed her young with her own blood. The pelican was taken up by Christianity, representing Jesus sacrificing himself for humanity, and becoming a metaphor for unconditional love and faith. In her second fiction film, director Katrin Gebbe explores the nightmare version of parenthood. The result is a daring, jarring psychological drama about a mother pushed to logical and rational limits, with unexpected results.
· Gebbe’s inspiration for NOTHING BAD CAN HAPPEN was a news article about an abused, homeless teen, and the film was remarkable in its assured vision and strong performances. PELICAN BLOOD shows her evolving as a mature and strong auteur, inspired by becoming a mother herself. Working with her husband Moritz Schultheiß, one of Germany’s best up-and-coming cinematographers, Gebbe explores the driving forces of motherhood and a mother’s bond with her child. Comparisons to the EXORCIST are valid: mothers and daughters bound together both by love and something possibly evil. The results here are considerable and even beautiful in the face of the darkest and most horrible possibilities.
